What are Futures and Options (F&O)?

Futures and Options are types of derivative contracts used in the stock market to hedge risk, speculate on price movements, or earn profits with less capital.

1. Futures Contract:

A Futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell an asset (like Nifty, Bank Nifty, or stock) at a pre-determined price on a future date.

  • Obligation to fulfill the contract.

  • Profits/losses depend on price movements.

  • Used by traders for speculation or hedging.

Example: If you expect Reliance stock to rise, you can buy a Reliance future contract.

2. Options Contract:

An Option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to buy (Call) or sell (Put) an asset at a certain price before a specific date.

There are two types:

  • 📈 Call Option – Right to buy

  • 📉 Put Option – Right to sell

You pay a premium to buy options.

Example: If you expect Nifty to rise, you may buy a Call Option of Nifty 22500.
